The Aromatic Vision

The Aromatic Vision

The project represented my aromatic vision of scented eyewear and the derivation of associated accessories, merge accessories with perfume.

The image of a perfume merchant on the left above is from the book of perfume E and scents. Maquilagem and I soon associated it with the cover image of The Spectacle of Spectacles, from the same artist Nicolas de Larmessin.

They led me to the path of researching on connection between jewellery.

You are an orchard of pomegranates with choice fruits…

With every kind of incense tree, with myrrh and aloes

And all the finest spices.

My love is radiant… his head is purest gold…

His cheeks are like beds of spices yielding perfume.

His lips are like lilies dripping with myrrh.

His arm are rods of gold…

His body is like polished Ivory decorated with sapphire.

Scents is plugged directly into the part of the brain that is responsible for memory and emotion*, associated with feelings and affection. Through the perspective of deliver-ing affection, I found another historical catalogue of artefact- Lover’s Eye Miniature, which also deliver the message of affection and is composed with round silhouette. The message of affection is received, visually and odourfully, could more be incorporated?

The use of scents has eddied back and forth between the sacred and profane over the course of human history. As for jewellery, it possesses a magic of its own. For eons, the two have been combined in a variety of way, pomander is a very good example of it. Its history can be traced back to the 12 century, when Emperor Frederick Barbaros-sa is known to received many apple-shape golden scented pin-head from King Bald-win of Jerusalem, filled with resinous substances*.

Many fashion houses had already made their modern interpretations, as Est e Lauder commissioned David Webb for a Twin Lion Cuff Bracelet, with the lion heads kept openable and a piece of solid perfume is available underneath.

The precious material applied, like gold, silver and gem stone, imply the value of the fragrance. The colour red symbolised affection, ...red cloths became associated with pomander. The pomander was also a favourite pendant of the rosary.“scent and artifect combination”

Scented Sleeves

For someone who appreciates the idea of scented eyewear yet wants something less of a statement, a pair of simple silicon-made temple end add-on can be the perfect replacement. Silicon is stretchable and able to fit various sizes of temple end, also made the loading and unloading of the scented beads very accessible. Porcelain-made scented beads are low-bisque fired, porous and able to hold scent for long; the same as well with polyIFF™ plastic beads. They are in contact with the heat point behind the ears, act as a scent activator.

Granita al Mandarino

Sicilian-inspired cologne created to evoke the feeling of waking up in summery southern Italy. The long-lasting citrusy freshness was a result of employing IFF captives Vertonic and Cristalfizz as well exploring the potential of LMR’s Orange Flower Absolute from Egypt.

Ballet at the Bolshoi

A Russian-themed perfume, designed to convey the excitement and anticipation of an auditorium attending the Ballet. The tension revolves around a suede accord (the “dramatic” Saffiano is married to the “decadent” Vanilla CO2 LMR and a powdery Iris accord), contrasted with fresh and vibrant spices sourced from LMR’s palette of naturals (Turmeric Leaf Oil India & Cardamom Oil East India).
